Split-level homes became popular starting the 1940s based on early designs by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and his Arts and Crafts design. However, renovations take certain expertise due to the design of these homes. Splits normally had a lower level for informal living, a middle level for the kitchen and dining areas, and an upper floor for bedrooms and personal spaces. Adding another bedroom on the upper level may not be possible due to floor loading or wall constraints.
